  Meaning:

  Gu                             - darkness

  Ru                             - drives away

  Guru                          - one who drives away the darkness of ignorance

  Brahma                      - The Creator

  Vishnu                       - The Preserver

  Devo                         - Lord

  Maha                         - great

  Iswara                       - Lord Shiva

  Mahesvara                 - Lord Shiva who destroys to protect and maintain balance in the world

  Saaksat                      - verily, truly

  Gurusaaksat              - he Guru truly is

  Parabrahman             - Supreme Being

  Tasmai                       - therefore

  Sri                              - auspicious

  Gurave                      - to that Guru

  Namaha                     - I prostrate

 

 Paraphrase :

 The Guru is Lord Brahma who creates good qualities in me; the Guru is Lord Vishnu who nurtures and fosters the good qualities in me and the Guru is God who as Lord Shiva removes the negative tendencies in me. Such Guru is truly the Supreme Brahman and to that Guru I humbly surrender myself.
